My Ride

"My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between, I occupy myself as best I can."
--Cary Grant

What would be your preferred getting-to-school method of transportation?

I made up this topic on my way to school, of course.
See, I usually walk. And it's a great walk...just a good feeling opening the front gate, turning right and I'm on my way. So by the time I'm at school, I'm awake and in a good morning-mood. I pass interesting people on the way, usually a lot of kids and parents on their way to Charleston Day School. Like one mom who has the strangest bike ever. A regular grown-up sized bike with a little kid sized bike growing out of the seat. Hard to explain. I've never seen anything like it. It's like a budding tandem.
One of the highlights of my walk are the two crossing guards. Traffic on Broad Street literally stops for me as Barbara (?) holds up her stop sign (bedecked with flashing red lights) and walks to the middle of the street. All just for me to cross!! Usually, a student will tell me later in the day, "Miss Brow-uh, Mrs. Ables! I saw you walking to school!" Funny, none of them ever offer me a ride...
But the best crossing guard of all is on Queen Street. Ask her a question as you pass like, "how are you doing this morning?" and you'll get a song in response: "I'm doing finnnnnneeee! Fine! Fine! Fiiiine!" Amazing. Operatic.
Then today I decided it was time. To Ride My Bike To School.
See, I've been wanting a cruiser bike since I moved to Charleston. Something to make getting around town easy, something to take care of the environment, something with...a bell. And let me tell you, I got the best wedding gift ever:

Yep, a Trek Navigator 3.0 WSD. It's awesome. It's a great bike, it rides smoothly, it has a bell. I'm one happy English teacher. And as I pedaled my way down Tradd Street past so many historical homes and even a mom and her daughter driving a golf cart to school...I realized: this is my preferred get to school method of transportation.
So, thanks Advent UMYF girls, I think of you fondly every time I'm on my bike.

oh my. I know the bike you are talking about. it baffles me every time. where did they buy that? or did they weld it on there?
and those cross guards are amazing, i love the one on Queen Street! She says the same thing to me..fiiinnne. hahaha. and the one with the flashing stop sign is pretty amazing too. She tried to help an old man cross Broad yesterday and he got mad and shouted "I'm too old for this!" Needless to say, in the end, he had to get her help.
